About us
East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS) provides emergency 999, urgent care services for the 4.8 million people within Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. We also provide Patient Transport Services for Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire patients with routine hospital or clinical appointments. We employ more than 4,400 staff across over 70 locations, including two Emergency Operations Centres at Nottingham and Lincoln. Our largest staff group is made up of our accident and emergency 999 crews and we operate a fleet of around 555 vehicles, including emergency ambulances, fast response cars, specialised vehicles and patient transport vehicles. Every day we receive around 3,300 calls from members of the public who have called 999 – the equivalent of receiving an emergency call every 25 seconds.

At Nottinghamshire Pride on Saturday 26 July, we taught hundreds of people life-saving skills such as CPR, wound packing and bandage application to manage catastrophic blood loss, and how to use an EpiPen in the event of severe allergic reactions. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn, picked up some educational materials, or simply had a chat with our team. Special mention to the young heroes who gave CPR a go and walked away with certificates! If you didn't get a chance to see us at the event, you can still access the activity pack for children on our website: https://lnkd.in/ehgRmiFp We'll also be at Belper Pride this weekend. If you're there, come say hi.

We’re proud to share that our Consultant Midwife Camella Main has received the Silver Chief Midwifery Officer Award for her leadership on developing the Pre-Hospital Maternity Decision Tool. The tool helps ambulance crews quickly identify abnormal observations, signs and symptoms in pregnancy - reducing delays and improving communication with hospitals. Camella works at EMAS two days a week, as she continues to also be a senior midwife at London Ambulance Service too. Her role involves reviewing incidents and data, supporting crews through debriefing, ensuring pathways are appropriate, contributing to equipment and medicines management working groups and leading the development of maternity and newborn education. The award recognises performance that goes above and beyond the expectations of the everyday role that the midwife is expected to perform in their current role. It is for midwives who demonstrate excellence in clinical practice; education, research, patient and carer experience, leadership, tackling diversity and health inequalities. With experience across the UK, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and in global volunteer roles, Camella brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her work. We’re thrilled to have her on the team – and delighted to celebrate this well-earned recognition!

Today, Monday 21 July 2025, Ripley Ambulance Station marks a significant milestone, its 70th anniversary. First opened on 21st July 1955, the station has been a pillar of emergency care in North Derbyshire for seven decades, supporting generations of ambulance crews and saving countless lives in the local community. To commemorate the occasion, a celebratory event was held over on Sunday 20th July, bringing together past and present crew members to honour the station’s proud history. Around 30 people attended, with the atmosphere full of warmth, nostalgia and connection. For some, it was the first time seeing old colleagues in over 20 years. Laughter rang out as stories were shared, memories relived and a few tears shed for those no longer with us. Guests enjoyed refreshments and an impressive birthday cake while catching up. Children were especially thrilled to climb aboard an ambulance, trying out the lights and sirens for themselves, an experience that brought huge smiles and a lot of excitement. Many attendees commented on how special it was to be part of the station's legacy and reconnect with the Ripley ‘family’. Ripley Ambulance Station has been central to the region’s emergency services since the 1950s. Over the years, it has witnessed vast changes in clinical practice, vehicle design, and healthcare technology, but one thing has remained constant: the dedication of the people who work there. As staff celebrate 70 years of service, they not only reflect on the past but also look ahead with pride and determination to continue serving the community for many more years to come.

We have become the first ambulance service in the UK to introduce two new training tools – REACT-XR and REACT-TTX. These platforms use virtual reality and group-based scenario exercises to help prepare ambulance crews and specialist teams for major incidents. With this approach, staff can practice responding to a range of emergency situations in a safe and controlled environment. They use virtual reality (VR) headsets to experience different scenarios, such as treating patients with different injuries and managing several casualties at once in locations like public spaces or workplaces. Alongside this, crews can also take part in group discussions where they work through the emergency situations together, talking about the decisions they would make and how they would work as a team. This training aims to help staff develop their skills, enhance teamwork, and support a consistent standard of care for patients across the region. By practicing in digital settings that the VR headsets provide, our emergency responders can be better prepared for the types of incidents they may face in real life. We worked with the developers to introduce the programme to our staff, following a successful funding application and support from the Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response (EPRR) team. We are continuing to expand the range of training scenarios available and exploring opportunities for joint training with other emergency services. Jonny Berrecloth, Special Operations Training Manager at East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “This training provides our staff with additional opportunities to practice and develop their skills in a safe environment. “We continue to review feedback and develop the programme to support our teams and the communities we serve. “We are grateful to our teams for their positive approach and willingness to adopt new ways of learning, helping us continue to improve emergency care for our communities.”
