A huge privilege to be at today’s University of Southampton Science Park Catalyst Programme graduation ceremony. Many congratulations to the incredible small businesses who completed the programme today, and particularly the 4 health innovators we’ve had the privilege to support directly – Ivo Vasilev of Genie, Michael J. B. of Identimab, Salim Khakoo of Kargenera, and Tim Crook & Lucy Williams of Dxtrus. Well done on excellent presentations – clear to all how much had been learned through Catalyst. And well done to the brilliant Catalyst organisers and mentors for another first class year. Health Innovation Wessex has partnered with University of Southampton Science Park to deliver a health innovation stream for health/med-tech businesses, which is in addition to the core Catalyst programme. Scientists in Southampton are making exciting progress in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistant bacteria are not killed by antibiotics. Viruses that attack bacteria, known as phages, offer a promising alternative. Unpicking how bacteria protect themselves against phages, and how phages overcome these defences, could be a significant step in defeating antibiotic resistant bacteria. A new study, led by our BRC's Franklin L. Nobrega, is the first to describe how a bacterial defence mechanism against phages, called Kiwa, works. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ecbfp-vm

🚀 The UK government has launched a bold new Life Sciences Sector Plan—a key part of its flagship Industrial Strategy. This exciting ten-year mission is all about tapping into the brilliance of British science and innovation to spark long-term economic growth and build a stronger, prevention-focused NHS. Check out our impact report in Wessex that we delivered with our partners in the NHS, academia and industry: https://lnkd.in/euDzEaRH
Richard Stubbs, Chair of the Health Innovation Network, responding to the Life Sciences Sector Plan, said: "The UK is now in a race to the top to become a global powerhouse for the life sciences sector. To achieve this, we will need to go further to find, test and implement health innovations at pace and at scale. It is right that place-based innovation capacity and capabilities have been identified in the Life Science Sector Plan as a key enabler for the sector. "The Health Innovation Network is proud of the impact that we deliver with our partners in the NHS, academia and industry - from SMEs to multinationals - to improve patient outcomes, release capacity in the NHS to cut waiting lists and to drive economic growth, all priorities that are rightly recognised in this plan. The contribution the life sciences sector has to improve the health and wealth of the country is more evident now than ever. Through working locally with our vibrant life science sector, our health innovators, and our NHS staff we will deliver real change on the ground that has a national impact, and that supports the bold ambitions set out in the Life Sciences Sector Plan." 👉 Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eXmCdTHi Department for Science, Innovation and Technology Richard Stubbs The Rt.
