Breaking ground on sustainable infrastructure! Approximately 2.4 million recycled milk bottles’ worth of plastic waste is being transformed into noise walls on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway. As construction begins, we're proud to be part of the Eastern Freeway Burke to Tram Alliance, delivering recycled plastic noise walls. This groundbreaking project will:  ✓ Divert 104 tonnes of plastic from landfill  ✓ Transform hard-to-recycle soft plastics into community infrastructure  ✓ Reduce carbon emissions through lighter materials and installation  ✓ Honour Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung culture through co-designed patterns  ✓ Create 100% recyclable infrastructure for future generations Each panel combines both hard plastics (HDPE milk bottles) and soft plastics (pallet wrap), incorporating 75% recycled content from waste streams that typically have few recycling options. This proves circular economy principles can deliver real infrastructure solutions without compromising quality, safety, or performance. • Laing O'Rourke has a proud history of supporting the armed forces community, and this visit is a fantastic example of how we continue to honour that commitment. Well done Explore Manufacturing - part of Laing O'Rourke.

As part of our ongoing support to Armed Forces personnel, we recently hosted a unique visit to our Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction. 525 STRE (Specialist Team Royal Engineers), 63 Works Group, Royal Engineers who deliver Infrastructure capability to the Armed Forces attended the visit as part of their ongoing professional development focused on understanding Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). Attendees were able to hear presentations highlighting how modern methods of construction can offer opportunities for improving safety, quality, sustainability and speed throughout project delivery, before joining a guided tour of our facility, witnessing the advanced manufacturing processes and digital technologies action. To further develop our engagement, Explore Manufacturing are proud to work with Buildforce - a charity dedicated to helping service personnel transition from the military to a career in construction and the built environment, to deliver a programme to enable us to offer work placements for individuals from the military to aid their training, starting later this year. 🚧 Progress continues on the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge in WA The Fremantle Bridges Alliance, which includes Main Roads Western Australia, Laing O'Rourke, Arup and WSP, has completed installation of all four pile cap shells and reinforcement cages on the new bridge in Fremantle, a coastal city in Western Australia. Each shell was filled with 214 cubic metres of concrete, which is approximately 38 truckloads. The lower bridge towers on the southern side of the river are now approaching deck level. Once complete, the towers will rise approximately 36 metres above the water. This work marks a significant step in delivering a safer, more resilient crossing for the Fremantle community and the broader Perth region.

We are proud to share the success of our supported internship programme in partnership with Westminster Kingsway college. The programme enabled neurodivergent students to gain invaluable real-world skills and experiences through an 8-month work placement at our HS2 Old Oak Common Station project. We are proud of the hard work and dedication of all the students, and would like to congratulate Hakeem Al-Yasin for securing a part-time, paid role with the quality and office management team following the internship. Hakeem's increased confidence and growth has been fantastic to witness throughout the programme. This initiative not only helped our interns but also boosted morale and fostered a sense of shared purpose within our team. We are committed to making our industry inclusive and a place where everyone can thrive, and this programme is a testament to that. Last month, we proudly supported the Australian Defence Magazine South Australian Defence Summit as platinum sponsor. With over 300 delegates from Defence, government and industry, the summit explored the infrastructure, systems and research needed to strengthen Australia's sovereign capability. Our General Manager – Defence, Glen Billington, shared insights on why infrastructure must now be seen not just as an enabler, but as a strategic asset in its own right, one that underpins national resilience. His keynote explored how we can build the physical assets and the systems, supply chains, and skills that will support them in a contested world. Read his full address in our Thinking Blog: https://lnkd.in/gbh6kUkA We also had strong representation across the panel discussions, with Pat Cashin (Clients Director), Danielle Whiting (Project Manager - Clients & Markets), Jarrod Sultana (Project Leader - Clients & Markets) and Greg Peters (Robotics and Automation Lead - Technology and Innovation) participating across the summsummit'see streams covering infrastructure foundations, future capability systems, and Defence research and development. Thanks to Australian Defence Magazine for hosting such a valuable event. #AUKUS #Defence
