✨ Becki’s journey to becoming a midwife is one of strength, love, and incredible support from our WUTH maternity team 💜 After becoming a mum at 17, and later caring for her own mum until she sadly passed away, Becki is now using the gift her mum left her to follow her dream of midwifery. “She would be so proud of me. I feel her with me on this journey. The team at WUTH have been so understanding of my personal commitments, and if I need to change a shift to accommodate my family, they always do their best to help.” She’s joined by fellow student midwives Tiffany and Hannah, who are also raising families while training — and both praised the WUTH midwifery family. Tiffany says: “Everyone knows my name and takes time to answer my questions—no matter how small.” Hannah adds: “If we show an interest in something, staff go out of their way to provide extra training.” We’re so proud of our team for creating such a compassionate and inclusive learning environment 🌟 Link for the news article: https://shorturl.at/4HTgY #WUTH #MidwiferyJourney #StudentMidwives #TeamWUTH #WUTHCareers #CompassionInCare #FutureMidwives Photo: Left to right – Hannah Mew, Tiffany Omahoney, Becki Edwards

Are you interested in developing your role through research? Becoming a Principal Investigator (PI) could be a fantastic option for achievement and reward. A PI is the researcher who leads the clinical research team and, along with the other members of the research team, regularly monitors study participants’ health to determine the study’s safety and effectiveness. Why not join a 'Becoming a PI' session? It's a bite-sized event, which can be offered in a range of formats, from 1.5 hours to a half day. It's offered to potential PIs to support them before their first study, to raise awareness of the roles and responsibilities of being a PI and the expectations of the sponsor and others. To take part you will need to have completed NIHR Introduction to GCP. To participate - register with NIHR Learn and select the Regionally Delivered Learning tab https://lnkd.in/ezr_P49m Or email for more info -nw.rrdn@nihr.ac.uk

🔥 👏 WUTH has partnered with laboratory specialist BioGrad to support transformative research using donated umbilical cords to advance regenerative medicine and cancer care across the UK. This programme, now available to WUTH’s maternity service users, enables families to donate umbilical cord blood and tissue post-birth. These safe, anonymous, non-invasive donations are supporting vital studies into many conditions including historically underfunded areas such as women's health and childhood genetic disorders. Angela Kerrigan, Consultant Midwife at WUTH, said: “Donating an umbilical cord is a simple and generous act which could help unlock the next generation of treatments for a range of serious conditions.” The project reflects WUTH’s ongoing commitment to patient-led research and innovation, with over 40 active studies currently underway across the Trust. 📢 Learn more about this impactful partnership and how it could benefit future generations: https://shorturl.at/l8fI5 #HealthcareInnovation #RegenerativeMedicine #MedicalResearch #WomenInSTEM #CancerResearch #NHS #WirralResearch #BioGrad #ClinicalResearch #WUTH #FutureOfMedicine #WomensHealth #ChildhoodGeneticDisorders BioGrad Dr Natalie Kenny Dr Angela Kerrigan

🙌 In the news! WUTH Consultant Sally Pennington has come full circle—once a sixth-former fainting in theatre during her Intromed placement, she now leads the very programme that helped launch her medical career. Sally, now Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Cancer Lead, welcomed 70 students to this year’s Intromed Week. The long-running programme, now in its 25th year, offers hands-on experience across multiple clinical specialties and has expanded to include practical skills training, life support sessions, and even a medically-themed escape room. Sally, who took over as Clinical Lead following the retirement of long-standing organiser Joyce Magennis, shared: "Attending Intromed had a massive impact on my life. I’m proud to carry that legacy forward and ensure today’s students receive the same inspiration I once did." Acting Medical Director Ranj Mehra also praised staff: "Our teams have gone above and beyond to deliver a fantastic experience. These students represent the future of the NHS." 🌟 What an incredible keynote from Helen Bevan at our Leadership Conference this morning. Helen is an internationally recognised leader in managing change and improvement in healthcare. She shared powerful, real-life insights into healthcare systems, people, and how we can truly empower individuals to lead change. Helen reminded us that organisations often underestimate the impact of small actions — “Don’t ask people to bring a cathedral, ask them to bring a brick.” 🧱 It’s all about creating agency and building momentum, one step at a time. Helen is leading our next session at 1.30pm for more thought-provoking ideas and powerful insights for all WUTH staff.
