Our latest community clean-up saw fantastic support today, with 28 volunteers made up of council staff, local residents, Onward Homes staff, and councillors, coming together to help improve the Whitefield area around Tonge Close Basketball Court. Together, the volunteers tackled litter, took part in Balsam bashing, which is the manual removal of Himalayan balsam, an invasive plant species and helped with tree maintenance thanks to support from City of Tree. A big thank you to everyone who got involved! These clean-ups are part of a wider programme bringing our ‘LET’S Do It!’ Community Strategy principles; Local, Together, Enterprising and Strengths, to life in real and visible ways. There’s still time to get involved with places still available at more of our clean-up events happening over the summer. It’s a great opportunity to spend a couple of hours in the fresh air with colleagues and help make a real difference in our communities. https://lnkd.in/ej_u6KTZ

This week, senior leaders, councillors, and corporate parenting champions came together to sign Bury’s new promise to our care-experienced young people. This important document was co-created in partnership with young representatives from the Children in Care Council, ensuring that their voices, priorities, and lived experiences are at the heart of our pledge to them. Our promise is more than words—it’s a commitment to real support for care leavers in Bury. We already work to provide safe and suitable accommodation, opportunities in education and employment, financial advice, access to health services and more. But just as important is our commitment to actively involve our care-experienced young people in all policies and procedures that affect them, and to actively champion them in all that we do. Every member of staff at Bury Council has a role to play as a corporate parent and has a vital role in delivering on this promise to make a difference. By working together and keeping the needs and aspirations of care-experienced young people at the forefront, we can help them achieve their potential and ensure they feel supported every step of the way.

Like many local authorities across the country, Bury Council is on a mission to breathe new life into its town centres. Chief executive Lynne Ridsdale spoke to Place North West about how her organisation is funding that vision. The pandemic brought about a change in working practices that sucked workers out of town centres up and down the country, while the rise in online shopping was having an impact on bricks and mortar retail long before that.
