Winvic Construction Ltd and Active Tunnelling Ltd recently completed tunnelling works beneath the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, marking a significant milestone for the WMI development. The tunnelling works involved the use of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which operated at a depth of 10 metres and drilled a length of 25 metres as part of the site-wide drainage works. A traditional practice in tunnel drilling, dating back to the 16th century, is to name the TBM carrying out the works. Winvic asked industry organisation CECA Midlands, to name the TBM in this instance and Lisa Hollington, Business Support Officer at CECA Midlands, chose ‘Red Emma’ in honour of Emma Sproson - a pioneering working-class political figure from the Black Country. Rob Cook, Managing Director for Civils & Infrastructure, Winvic commented: “Completing this technically complex tunnelling operation beneath the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal is a proud milestone for everyone involved in the West Midlands Interchange project. It showcases the precision, collaboration and engineering excellence that Winvic is known for. James Markby, Managing Partner at Logistics Capital Partners, said: “This is a significant step forward for the project, continuing the excellent progress being made across the piece. “The WMI site is set to become the country’s most significant rail served logistics development and will become a crucial component of the UK’s strategic freight network. It will be key to decarbonising UK logistics and supporting the country’s wider net zero aspirations. “WMI will also make a significant contribution to the local economy, creating 8500 direct jobs and boosting opportunities for people in South Staffordshire, the Black Country, the West Midlands, and other surrounding areas.”

🚅 The first freight train has arrived at SEGRO plc Logistics Park, Northampton's new Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) for Maritime Transport Ltd. 🎉 This marks not only the operational launch of the SRFI, but also the first freight journey on the reinstated East West Rail section between Oxford and Bletchley - an important leap forward in the UK’s drive for sustainable, integrated freight solutions. This #NetZeroWeek we are celebrating our achievements in delivering Net Zero projects that achieve carbon reduction through our innovative approach to delivering sustainable buildings! Since 2021, we're proud to have delivered 24 Net Zero Carbon in Construction projects and 12 Low Carbon in Construction projects, with 12 more Net Zero projects currently underway totalling 84 individual facilities 🏭🌍 Across 30 of these projects, we’ve collectively reduced 251,749 tCO₂e (A1–A5), an average of 8,392 tCO2e saved per project. Each of our Net Zero projects are aligned, and verified in accordance with: - The RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment (edition 1 or 2, depending on project start date) - The UK Green Building Councils 2019 Net Zero Carbon Definition Framework - And we’re now adopting the latest UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) for Net Zero projects, where applicable. Our approach to delivering these developments focuses on innovative design and construction methods, low carbon material procurement, robust carbon data and analysis, and transitioning to fossil fuel alternatives such as renewable energy, LPG and hydrogen to power our on-site temporary welfare units. Together our collaborative efforts with clients, and our Green Supply Chain have driven significant reductions in upfront carbon emissions across our projects, delivering assets that are not only Net Zero in construction, but designed for long-term environmental value.
